Dutch Colonial Satinwood & Ebony Cupboard

Late 19th century

SGD 16,750

An antique Dutch colonial satinwood cupboard in two sections with three small drawers in the centre. The upper section with an ebony cornice and ebony carving on the frieze. The doors, with beaded ebony moulding around the panels, open to reveal a mahogany interior with two shelves. The centre stile is decorated with a pierced floral panel in ebony. The lower section mirrors the top with ebony moulding at the top edge and base, the panelled doors with beaded ebony details and a centre stile decorated with ebony carving. The doors enclosing one shelf. All resting on a base with a beautifully carved and pierced apron. The ebony legs are in a traditional Dutch style with a bulbous top, tapering, with a ring and ending in a peg foot.

The cupboard is in good condition and has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. Satinwood was the most beautiful and highly valued wood used in the latter part of the 18th century and is perhaps the most widely known of decorative timbers. It is a highly figured, close-grained, hard, durable wood native to Ceylon and the East Indies.
