Indo-Dutch Mahogany & Ebony Chest on Stand

Mid 19th century

A typical Dutch colonial mahogany chest on stand of solid plank construction with a hinged cover.
The cover with a molded ebony edge opens to a plain interior with a small document compartment on the left hand side.
The chest rests on a stand with a deep apron, the short sides and back are rectangular. The front has a deep, pierced-carved scalloped edge with beautifully inlaid stringing and decoration in ebony and white cedar.
The top of the stand has an ebony molded edge and houses three drawers of equal length with inlaid star decoration and ebony pulls.
The legs are in a traditional Dutch style with a bulbous top, tapering, with one ring and ending in a peg foot.

The chest has been lovingly restored and finished to its former glory using a traditional form of French polishing and waxing. The mahogany has a rich warm shade with a striking grain.
