Indo-Dutch carved mahogany chest on standMid 19th century
A carved Dutch colonial mahogany chest on stand with a hinged cover. The chest rests on a stand with a deep, scalloped apron with relief carving in a floral design. The stand has two drawers of equal length with brass escutcheons and recessed brass handles. The top of the stand with a moulded edge.
The chest opens to reveal a fitted interior with many storage compartments with carved lids.
It includes two secret compartments beneath the left and right compartments. The compartment in the front can be locked. This locking mechanism is quite special: the chest can only be locked if this compartment is locked, while the compartment can only be opened if the lock for the chest is put in the closed position.
The legs are in a traditional Dutch style with a bulbous top, tapering, with rings and ending in a peg foot.
